How to write a marketing strategy

Creating a successful marketing strategy involves several key steps to ensure your efforts align with your business goals and effectively reach your target audience. Sentio Marketing has created a structured approach to help you get started:

  1. Define your business goals

Identify what you want to achieve with your marketing efforts. These goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timed so they have an end goal, (SMART).

  1. Conduct market research

Understand your market, competitors, and target audience. This will involve analysing and understanding market trends, customer needs, and competitor strategies.

  1. Create customer personas

Develop detailed profiles of your ideal customers, this will really help you understand their needs and pains and may help you understand them better too.

What to include in this persona work is demographics, behaviours, preferences, and pain points to tailor your marketing efforts effectively.

  1. Identify your unique selling proposition (USP)

Understand what sets your product or service apart from the competition. Your USP should highlight the unique benefits that only your brand/business can offer.

  1. Choose your marketing channels
  • Select the most effective channels to reach your target audience. This includes
  • Social media, such as Meta/LinkedIn/YouTube but not limited to these platforms
  • Email marketing, setting up email notifications through MailChimp/Constant Contact for example can you deliver the message into the audience’s inbox. Through this method you can also track who opens and what they click through to your website;
  • content marketing,
  • SEO/SEM which is a great way to attract new business both organically and through paid marketing. It must be noted organic growth is slower to reap rewards.

  1. Set your budget

This is key to making the strategy work, without this you cannot achieve your goals.  Allocate resources for each marketing activity. Ensure your budget is realistic and aligns with your goals and the expected return on investment (ROI).

  1. Develop your messaging and positioning

Craft clear and compelling messages that resonate with your target audience. Your positioning and the narrative should reflect your brand’s values and USP.

  1. Plan your marketing campaigns

Detail the specific actions you’ll take to execute your strategy. This includes content creation, campaign planning, and scheduling.  If required create a content plan and make sure this is relevant, has graphics and or video to communicate your message correctly.

  1. Implement and monitor

Deploy your marketing plan it is important to track performance using key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs will help you understand what is successful and what will need ‘tweaking’ or changing.

Remember it is okay to change if something does not work then find another route.  A/B testing is a great way to measure what campaigns work with graphics/imagery/video and content.

Regularly review your metrics to assess the effectiveness of your strategy.

  1. Adjust and optimise

Based on your performance data, make necessary adjustments to improve your strategy. Continuous optimisation ensures your marketing efforts remain effective and aligned with your goals.
